Overview of Outsourcing

Contact howard@chalkinstitute.org if intested in scheduling this class at your company.

Outsourcing is often equated with offshoring and associated with the disappearance of U.S. jobs. Yet over 90% of outsourcing is domestic. This class explores the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing for companies, their vendors, and U.S. society as a whole. Outsourcing involves risks, rewards and operational issues that can affect your company's marketing position, image and messages to customers. Outsourcing can either help or hinder your very important customer relationships and the brand promise.

Students will explore the decision-making process, selection of a vendor, and  the management issues involved in outsourcing. The class includes a guest lecturer from an outsourcing company or vendor. Participants receive a cost structure spreadsheet, ROI calculator, needs analysis spreadsheet, outsource vendor selection matrix, sample request for proposal and a sample service level agreement. Topics examined are:

  • Definitions of and differences between outsourcing and offshoring
  • U.S. exports and imports of services
  • The benefits and risks of outsourcing
  • What to outsource and what not to outsource
  • Applies toward the Certificate Course in Marketing
